2024,July 12th - Kang Ik-joong, a celebrated installation artist, will showcase his monumental piece 'Hangeul Temple' at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt this October. At 64, Kang is the first Korean artist invited to participate in the international exhibition 'Forever Is Now (FIN: Forever Is Now).' Held annually at the UNESCO World Heritage Pyramids, this exhibition is sponsored by the Egyptian government and UNESCO. Since its inception in 2021, it has attracted over 1.5 million visitors each year and achieved more than a billion views on social media.

In addition to his participation in this prestigious event, Kang is celebrating his 40-year artistic career with a retrospective exhibition in his hometown of Cheongju. The exhibition, titled 'Journey Home: Ik-Joong Kang,' opened on July 4th at the Cheongju Museum of Art. This retrospective highlights the artist's significant projects from his extensive global career, which began in 1984 when he moved to New York. It features new works that reinterpret the landscape of his hometown, including pieces such as 'Samramansang,' the 'Moon Jar' series, and 'Hangeul Public Projects.'


Kang's enduring connection to Cheongju is evident in his retrospective. He expressed, “Cheongju is a place I always miss, feel excited about, and am curious about, even from afar. I installed Musimcheon, which runs through the city from north to south, so it appears to flow down the open hall steps, and I displayed Mt. Uamsan, where I played as a child, at the entrance to the second floor.” During his time studying abroad, Kang had limited opportunities to paint as he needed to earn money. He began creating 3-inch (7.6 cm) pieces, painting images that came to mind while on buses or subways. This marked the inception of his signature '3-inch canvases.' Thousands of these palm-sized canvases come together to form diverse sculptural images. The 10-meter-high first-floor exhibition hall is filled with 'Things I Know,' which consists of 3,000 Hangeul characters and 200 sentences.

Kang also highlighted the increasing popularity of Hangeul. He mentioned that last year’s Hangeul workshop at Ain Shams University in Cairo was so successful that it drew overflowing crowds. Inspired by his visit to an Egyptian temple during that time, he created his latest work, viewing it as a lifelong project.

The Cheongju exhibition is open until September 29, with an admission fee of 1,000 won for adults. The exhibition at the Egyptian Pyramids is scheduled from October 24 to November 16. This dual celebration of his career marks significant milestones both in his hometown and on the international stage, showcasing his contributions to art and cultural exchange.
