“It’s so weird, the TV show about a woman who turns into a chicken nugget?”

Actor Ahn Jae Hong, who casted in this series said, “It’s a work with a pleasant strangeness, just because it’s fun is enough.”

“Chicken Nugget” is the story of her father Choi Sun-man and his unrequited love Go Back-joong struggling to bring back Min-ah. who has become a chicken nugget. This work is directed by Lee Byung-hun. He worked with Ryu Seung-ryong in the movie ‘Extreme Job’ and with Ahn Jae-hong in the drama ‘Melodramatic Constitution.’ The original work is a Naver webtoon of the same name. This is author Park Ji-dok, who was discovered through the 2019 Naver Webtoon World's Greatest Contest. The author said that conversations exchanged in real life became the motif of the work.

This work, which has a light topic and many comical elements, started off lightly. Author Park's older sister asked her to bring her just one piece of chicken nugget, but it was too lazy to move around, so she didn't bring the chicken nugget until the end. As her older sister walked out of her house, she shouted, “You bastard!” She said, “Have all and end up as a chicken nugget!” At that moment, the idea occurred to her that she was a woman who would turn into a chicken nugget.

She said that 2019, the year she created the webtoon, was the year she lost money through financial investments and thought, ‘Let’s just hang out until this month and get a job.’ Her manuscript had already been rejected elsewhere, so she thought she should try to compete after improving her drawing skills. Her older sister, who became the subject of her work, encouraged her to keep taking on the challenge by her side. “Just try registering,” she said, “I think it’s really fun,” and she even bought me some chicken nuggets. And the news of her win came against her expectations, she said.

In a situation where Netflix viewers are currently divided on whether they should watch this work or not, writer Park mentioned why they should watch Chicken Nugget.

I tend to decide on the ending and the overall framework from the stage of story planning. When serializing ‘Chicken Nugget’, I worked hard to plan it so much that A4 paper filled the entire wall of the room and constantly checked to make sure there were no errors. As a writer, the charm of ‘Chicken Nugget’ is that it is interesting, its characteristics are interesting, and its strengths are also interesting. If someone asks, “Why should I watch ‘Chicken Nugget’, among the many colorful and fun webtoons?” I hope the answer is “Because it’s just fun.”

“넷플릭스의 새로운 한국 드라마는 지금 당장 볼 수 있는 것 중 가장 이상한 것일 수도 있다”. “정주행 할까 아니면 그냥 넘겨버릴까?” 등 여러가지 의견들을 볼 수 있습니다. 작품에 출연 한 안재홍 배우는 이렇게 말했습니다. “기분 좋은 이상함을 지닌 작품이다, 그냥 재미있으니까 면 충분하다”

‘닭강정’은 닭강정이 돼버린 민아를 되돌리기 위해 아빠 최선만과 그녀를 짝사랑하는 고백중이 분투하는 이야기 입니다. 연출은 이병헌 감독이 맡았습니다. 이 감독은 류승룡과는 영화 ‘극한직업’에서, 안재홍과는 드라마 ‘멜로가 체질’에서 호흡을 맞춘 바 있습니다. 작품의 원작은 동명의 네이버 웹툰입니다. 2019년 네이버 웹툰 지상최대공모전을 통해 발굴된 박지독 작가 입니다. 작가는 실제 생활에서 주고받은 대화가 작품의 모티프가 됐다고 했습니다.

가볍게 볼 수 있는 주제이며 코믹요소가 많은 이 작품의 첫 시작도 가볍게 시작되었습니다. 박작가의 친언니가 닭강정을 하나만 갖다달라고 부탁했는데 움직이는 게 너무 귀찮아 끝까지 닭강정을 갖다주지 않았습니다. 언니가 집 밖으로 나가면서 “치사한 놈! 닭강정 혼자 다 먹고 닭강정이나 돼버려라!”라고 말했습니다. 그 순간 닭강정으로 변해버리는 여자라는 아이디어가 떠올랐다고 말했습니다.

그녀는 웹툰을 그린 2019년은 당시 금융 투자로 돈을 잃어 ‘딱 이번 달까지만 놀고 취업하자’고 생각했던 해 라고 합니다. 이미 다른 곳에서 거절당한 원고여서 그림 실력을 좀 더 키운 뒤 공모전에 도전해야겠다고 생각했고, 작품의 소재가 되어 준 언니가 옆에서 계속 도전해보라며 용기를 줬습니다. “그냥 접수라도 해봐”, “내가 보기에는 진짜 재미있다”며 닭강정도 사줬습니다. 그리고 기대와는 달리 당선 소식을 듣게 됐다고 말했습니다.

현재 넷플릭스 시청자들에게 이 작품을 봐야 하는지 말아야 하는지에 대한 의견이 많이 갈리고 있는 상황에서 박작가는 왜 닭강정을 봐야 하는지에 대해서 언급했습니다.

이야기 구상 단계부터 결말과 큰 틀을 정해두는 편입니다. ‘닭강정’을 연재할 때는 A4 용지가 방 한쪽 벽면을 모두 채울 만큼 열심히 구상하고 오류가 없는지도 계속 확인했습다. 작가로서 바람은 ‘닭강정’의 매력은 재미있는 것, 특징도 재미있는 것, 장점도 재미있는 것입니다. 만약 누군가 “화려하고 재미있는 수많은 웹툰 중 왜 ‘닭강정’을 봐야 해?”라고 질문한다면 “그냥 재미있으니까”라는 대답이 나오면 좋겠습니다.

닭강정은 주제가 가볍고 유쾌한만큼 이유도 가볍고 유쾌한 드라마입니다. 삶에 지쳐 아무 생각 없이 웃으며 시청할 수 있는 드라마를 찾는다면 닭강정을 정주행 해 보는 것도 좋을 것 같습니다.
