2024, April 26th -The 60th Venice Biennale promises to be a remarkable showcase for Korean art, as historic residences and monasteries throughout Venice, Italy will be adorned with masterpieces from the Korean art scene.

Running from April 20 to November 24, this edition of the world's largest art festival will feature special exhibitions dedicated to luminaries of modern and contemporary Korean painting, including Yoo Young Kuk, Seund Ja Rhee, and Lee Bae, among others.

With Venice serving as the epicenter of the international art world during this period, the event presents a prime opportunity to spotlight the diverse range and immense potential of Korean art on a global stage.

The South Korea Pavillion is represented at the Biennale by artist Koo Jeong A, whose original commission is titled "Odorama Cities." Known for investigating smell, the artist collaborated with a perfumer in Seoul to try and reproduce the aromas of the Korean Peninsula.

Other representative Korean art exhibition at the Venice Biennale is artist Yoo Youngkuk’s journey to the infinite. This exhibition sheds light on the pivotal period of the 1960s and 1970s in Yoo's artisticjourney, highlighting the transition from organic forms to geometric shapes and experimentation. Bold primary colors and subtle variations in warm and cool tones showcase the artist's endless exploration of pure abstraction.

Bartomeu Marí, former director of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and now an independent curator and critic, curated Seund Ja Rhee’s "Towards the Antipodes."

He highlights the significance of the artist's exploration of human relationships and the world through her work. Marí sees this exhibition as a chance to challenge the historical exclusion and undervaluation of female artists, offering insights into the role of painting in storytelling and communication.

Lee Bae’s moon house burning is an homage and exploration of a century-old ritual known as daljip taeugi deeply rooted in Korean folklore tradition. Held annually on the first full moon of the year, this ritual brings the entire community together to engage in a unique and symbolic celebration of cyclical cosmology. This can also be admired at the Venice Biennale.

In addition, Choi Jeong-hwa's "nature nurture" depicts towers constructed from gathered styrofoam discovered along the coast, expressing a yearning for ecological cooperation, while Kang Ik-joong displays his most recent piece, "Arirang," which preserves memories of the motherland in drawings of North Korean defectors.

Suh Do-ho's "Who Am We?", which has thousands of graduation album pictures organized as wallpaper, and Jung Yeon-doo's "Sangrok Tower," which depicts apartment life one of Korea's iconic residential forms are two examples of the reworked works from a modern perspective.

The exhibition aims to ensure the sustainability of art institutions through international interchange and solidarity, while also providing a platform for the Korean Pavilion to explore artistic practices for the next generation.

올해 제60회 베니스비에날레 에서는 이탈리아 베네치아의 유서 깊은 고택과 수도원이 한국 미술로 뒤덮입니다. 4월20일 부터 11월24일 까지 진행되는 세계 최대 미술 축제인 베네치아 비엔날레 기간에는, 유영국, 이성자, 이배 등 한국 근현대 회화 거장들의 특별전이 도시 곳곳에서 열립니다.

이 기간 베네치아는 국제 미술계의 이목이 집중되는 곳이므로 한국 미술의 폭넓은 스펙트럼과 저력을 알릴 절호의 기회입니다. 한국관은 '오도라마 도시'라는 제목의 커미션을 맡은 구정아작가가 비엔날레를 대표합니다. 냄새를 탐구하는 것으로 알려진 작가는 서울의 조향사와 협업하여 한반도의 향기를 재현해 보았습니다.

다른 대표적인 베네치아 비에날레 한국미술 전시는 유영국 작가의 무한 세계로의 여정이 있습니다.이번 전시는 유영국 작품세계의 중요한 전환점이자절정기라고 할 수 있는 1960-70년대 작품에 초점을 맞추어, 유기적인 형태에서 점차 이루어지는 기하학적인 형태로의 변화와 실험을 주목합니다.

과감한 원색, 따뜻하고 차가운 색의 미묘하고 풍부한 변주가 유영국의 순수한 추상을 향한 끝없는 여정을 보여줍니다. 전 국립현대미술관장이자 독립 큐레이터이자 평론가인 바르토메우 마리(Bartomeu Marí)는 이성자의 지구를 저편으로 를 큐레이터로 맡았습니다. 그는 작가가 작품을 통해 인간관계와 세계에 대한 탐구의 의미를 강조합니다. 이번 전시를 여성 예술가의 역사적 배제와 과소평가에 도전하고 스토리텔링과 커뮤니케이션에서 회화의 역할에 대한 통찰력을 제공하는 기회로 보고 있습니다.

이배의 달집 불태우기는 한국 민속 전통에 깊이 뿌리내린 달집 태우기라고 알려진 100년 된 의식에 대한 경의이자 탐구입니다. 매년 첫 번째 보름달에 열리는 이 의식은 전체 공동체가 함께 모여 순환 우주론에 대한 독특하고 상징적인 축하 행사에 참여합니다. 이 또한 베니스 비에날레에서 감상 할 수 있습니다.

그 외에 강익중 작가는 탈북자들의 고향에 대한 기억을 그림으로 그린 신작 '아리랑'을 선보이고, 최정화 작가는 해안가에서 주운 스티로폼을 모아 타워를 세운 작품으로 생태적 공존에 대한 염원을 상징을 보여줍니다.

수천 장의 졸업 앨범 사진을 배경화면으로 배치한 서도호의 '우리는 누구인가', 한국의 대표적인 주거지 중 하나인 아파트의 삶을 그린 정연두의 '상록타워' 등을 현대적 관점으로 재해석한 작품이이 전시됩니다.

이번 전시를 통해 한국관이 다음 세대의 예술적 실천을 탐구하고, 국제교류와 연대를 통해 예술기관의 지속가능성을 보장하는 플랫폼 역할을 기대해 봅니다.
