Lotte Museum will present a retrospective of French painter Michel Delacroix from Dec. 4 as part of programmes marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and France.

Titled “From Michel Delacroix, With Love,” the exhibition will bring together what the museum describes as the largest presentation of the artist’s original paintings to date. It will run through March 7, 2027, at Lotte World Tower in Seoul’s Jamsil district.

Born in Paris in 1933, Delacroix has spent much of his career painting the city as he remembers it from childhood. Rather than concentrating on monuments and tourist destinations, his works depict neighbourhood streets, small shops, cafés, children at play and couples walking beneath illuminated windows.

The scenes often evoke Paris during the artist’s childhood, when wartime occupation had reduced traffic and left parts of the city unusually quiet. Delacroix began drawing at the age of seven and later developed a distinctive approach centred on simplified forms and remembered urban life.

After studying art, he worked as a teacher while continuing to paint. From his 40s, the streets and residents of his early years became central to his work. His paintings reconstruct the city through personal memory rather than documentary observation, combining recognisable architecture with figures and incidents drawn from everyday life.

Lotte Museum has organised the retrospective around the idea of a letter sent by the artist to its audience. The exhibition will place original paintings alongside media-art installations intended to extend the streets and interiors depicted in the works into the surrounding gallery space.

The project also approaches French urban culture through ordinary routines rather than national symbols. In this way, the commemorative exhibition uses Delacroix’s personal images of Paris to consider how a city is retained and reconstructed through memory.

Among the works to be shown is “Joie de Noël” (2020), an acrylic painting depicting a Christmas scene. The work reflects the artist’s recurring interest in seasonal changes, street lighting and small encounters among residents.

Early-bird ticket sales opened on Oct. 29. Super early-bird tickets are available through Nov. 11 for 10,000 won, half the standard adult admission price of 20,000 won. General early-bird tickets will be sold for 12,000 won from Nov. 12 through Dec. 3.

“From Michel Delacroix, With Love” will be held at Lotte Museum on the seventh floor of Lotte World Tower, 300 Olympic-ro, Songpa District, Seoul.
