Han Soo-min Expands Lotus Paintings Into Moving Images in ‘Time of the Lotus’

Published October 25, 2026 08:53 PM

Artist Han Soo-min’s solo exhibition Time of the Lotus will run at Dongtan Art Square in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, from Oct. 27 to Nov. 13.

Presented as the third exhibition in the Hwaseong City Cultural Foundation’s “SQUARE Series,” the project expands Han’s paintings of lotus flowers into time-based video works.

The lotus has long represented life, purification and spiritual reflection in East Asian art. Han approaches it not only as a symbolic or botanical subject but also as a form through which changes in life and traces of existence can be examined.

Her paintings combine observations of nature with sensations and memories accumulated over time. Colour and form preserve a particular moment while also registering the extended process of looking and reflection that preceded it.

The exhibition introduces movement to these fixed images. Lotus flowers previously contained within the surface of a painting appear to emerge, change and disappear in video, shifting attention from the details of a single image to its duration and transformation.

Some sequences return to their original form after undergoing visible changes. Although the restored image may appear identical, the time spent observing its transformation alters how it is perceived. The structure connects natural cycles with memory, which is repeatedly reconstructed through present experience rather than preserved unchanged.

A participatory programme titled My Own Lotus Blooming on a Mirror allows visitors to draw a lotus directly on a mirror. Their reflected image becomes part of the resulting work, linking the exhibition’s natural imagery with an act of self-observation. Participation is available throughout the exhibition to the first 50 visitors each day.

A conversation with Han will take place at Dongtan Art Square at 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 27. Visitors may attend on site, although participation may be limited if capacity is reached.

Time of the Lotus runs from Oct. 27 to Nov. 13 at the Dongtan Multicultural Centre, located at 134 Nojak-ro in Hwaseong. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Mondays and public holidays. Admission is free.
