A groundbreaking new art school is set to open its doors in East Memphis, born from the ambitious vision of a graduate student who saw opportunity where others saw challenge. ShapeShifter Art School, founded by five dedicated artists and educators, aims to create a transformative learning environment that serves both aspiring artists and experienced teachers while providing diverse educational opportunities for the broader Memphis community.
The school's origins trace back to a conversation four years ago between University of Memphis professor Lisa Williamson and her graduate student Pam McDonnell. As McDonnell neared completion of her master's degree in art, Williamson posed a familiar question to her students about their post-graduation plans. While most students typically responded with goals of strengthening their portfolios and submitting artwork, McDonnell's answer was remarkably different and ambitious.
At a time when arts organizations across the country were facing significant struggles and challenges, McDonnell expressed her desire to establish an entirely new art school. Her vision went beyond traditional art education – she wanted to create a sanctuary where teachers and artists could thrive together while offering an extensive range of learning opportunities to serve the wider Memphis community.
The founding team of ShapeShifter Art School consists of five accomplished artists and instructors who share McDonnell's vision for transformative arts education. Along with Pam McDonnell, the founding group includes Lisa Williamson, Elizabeth Alley, Nikii Richey, and Melissa Dunn. These five educators bring together diverse expertise and experience to create a comprehensive learning environment that promises to reshape how art education is approached in the Memphis area.
Scheduled to open in November 2025, ShapeShifter Art School represents a bold investment in the future of arts education in Memphis. The school's location in East Memphis positions it to serve a diverse student population while contributing to the cultural vibrancy of the region. The founders envision their institution as more than just a traditional art school – they aim to create a dynamic space where creativity flourishes and both students and teachers can experience meaningful transformation through artistic expression and education.
