The renowned Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta has successfully completed the expansion of the Hopkins Center for the Arts at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. This major renovation and expansion project, finished in 2025, represents a significant investment in the arts at one of America's most prestigious educational institutions. The project breathes new life into the historic performing arts center while maintaining its legacy as a hub for interdisciplinary creativity.
The original Hopkins Center building, designed by the distinguished architectural firm Harrison and Abramovitz in 1962, has served as Dartmouth's primary venue for performing arts for over six decades. Snøhetta's thoughtful expansion honors this architectural heritage while introducing contemporary elements that enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The expansion project was executed in collaboration with PAGE (now Stantec) serving as the architect of record, ensuring seamless integration between old and new.
The design team assembled for this ambitious project included some of the industry's leading specialists. Arup served multiple roles as lighting consultant, acoustical and audiovisual expert, theater consultant, structural engineer, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) engineer. Engineering Ventures handled civil engineering aspects, while Consigli Construction Company managed the construction process. Additional expertise came from Entro for signage and wayfinding systems, SGH for facades and waterproofing solutions, and Venue for cost consulting services.
The expansion incorporates high-quality materials including steel and concrete, chosen for their durability and acoustic properties essential for a performing arts venue. These materials complement the existing structure while providing the technical capabilities required for modern theatrical productions. The use of terrazzo and marble elements adds sophistication to the interior spaces, creating an elegant environment befitting Dartmouth's academic prestige.
