Park Seo-bo, a trailblazing Korean abstract painter widely acknowledged as the father of the celebrated "dansaekhwa" or monochrome painting movement, passed away at the age of 91. His artistic legacy extended beyond Korea, evident through the global expressions of condolences and tributes following his demise.
The "dansaekhwa" movement, which gained traction in the early 1970s, emphasizes the meditative aspects of art production through purposeless and repetitive gestures, allowing for spiritual catharsis through painting. Park dedicated over five decades to his iconic and ever-evolving “Ecriture” series.
Park gained international recognition as a key figure in the dansaekhwa group exhibition at the 2015 Venice Biennale. The event catapulted participating artists to global acclaim, sparking bidding frenzies at auctions.

The memorial service for Park was held at Seoul National University Hospital’s funeral hall, drawing members of the domestic art community who paid their respects to the dansaekhwa master. Esteemed artists and cultural figures were present, including Chung Sang-hwa, Lee Bae, Kim Ku-lim, and Culture Minister Yoo In-chon.
Messages of remembrance flooded social media platforms, with artists and galleries acknowledging Park's enduring artistic contributions. Kukje Gallery, currently hosting a solo exhibition of Park's latest works, praised his dedication and legacy as a creative and educator.
The London-based White Cube art gallery referred to Park as "a giant of Korean art" and described his "Ecriture" series as embodying introspective methodologies rooted in Taoist, Buddhist philosophy, and Korean calligraphy tradition.
In his 2019 interview with The Korea Times, Park expressed the importance of diligent change and its impact on an artist's trajectory. He will be interred at Bundang Memorial Park in Gyeonggi Province, and plans are underway for the Park Seo-bo Art Museum to open in Seogwipo, Jeju Island next summer—marking the first museum dedicated to the artist.
