The work will be shown for the first time at "The Most Honest Confession: Chang Ucchin Retrospective," which opens on Sept. 14 at the Deoksugung branch of the national museum.

"Family" has been known for a long time as the picture of a family that Chang, who painted more than 30 family portraits in his lifetime, loved so much that he kept it by his bed. It was also the first thing he ever sold at his first show, which was in 1964 at Korea's first commercial art store, Bando Art store.

During their trip to elder Shunichi's old studio on the outskirts of Osaka, Bae found the small picture wedged inside a closet and covered in dust. After the piece was found, the museum bought it and put it in its permanent collection.
