The Seoul city government is on the hunt for symbolic and catchy names for its eight Han River Buses, part of a new water transportation system set to launch next year, officials announced on Sunday.
This public transportation service will connect major hubs along the Han River, from the southwestern Magok area to southeastern Jamsil. The city plans to introduce eight ships by the end of this year through a trial phase, with full operations commencing in March 2025.
Each ship will feature a cafeteria, a bicycle rack, and 199 seats. The fare is set at 3,000 won ($2.25), and users of the city’s Climate Card can access the service through a season ticket system.
Starting September 25, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is inviting the public to participate in a naming contest for the ships. They are looking for meaningful names that reflect the characteristics of the city and the river. While ships are often named after astronomical terms, nature, and city names, officials are seeking something more innovative and creative this time.
The contest will run from September 25 to October 7, and any Korean citizen can participate. Each person can submit up to three names via an application form available on the city government’s website. The final eight names will be announced in November, with each winner receiving a gift certificate worth 200,000 won.
“Han River Buses, Seoul’s representative water transportation method, will begin its official operation in March next year under the name given by the people,” said Joo Yong-tae, head of Seoul’s Future Han River Headquarters. "We will carry out the project smoothly so that it is loved by not only Seoul citizens but also foreigners with safe and pleasant public transportation".
