South Korean moviegoers are eagerly awaiting a lineup of star-studded blockbuster films this summer, raising hopes that these highly anticipated projects may revive the local cinema industry. The majority of films released this year have fallen short of expectations at the box office, prompting industry insiders to look to these upcoming releases as potential game-changers.
Leading the pack is "Unofficial Operation," an action-packed flick starring Ha Jung-woo and Ju Ji-hoon, slated to open on August 2, according to the film distributor Showbox. The plot revolves around Min-joon (Ha), a diplomat sent to war-torn Lebanon on a mission to locate a missing colleague. If successful, he stands to secure his dream post in the United States. In Lebanon, Min-joon crosses paths with Pan-soo (Ju), a Korean taxi driver fluent in Arabic but with an appearance reminiscent of a swindler. Set in 1987, the film is directed by Kim Sung-hoon, known for his work on the Netflix hit series "Kingdom" as well as action films like "A Hard Day" (2014) and "Tunnel" (2016).
On the same day, August 2, audiences can anticipate the long-awaited release of "The Moon," a film by renowned director Kim Yong-hwa. The star-studded cast includes Sol Kyung-gu, Kim Hee-ae, and Do Kyung-soo. "The Moon" tells the captivating story of Seon-woo (Do), a member of a space project crew who becomes stranded and isolated on the Moon, and Jae-kook (Sol), the former space center chief who embarks on an adventurous mission to rescue him. This is director Kim's first venture into the realm of space after his remarkable success with "Along with the Gods" (2017) and its sequel (2018).
Notably, director Ryoo Seung-wan's highly anticipated "Smugglers" will grace the screens a week earlier on July 26. Set in a peaceful seaside village during the 1970s, this crime action film centers around an accident that occurs in front of the "haenyeo," female divers who gather mollusks from the ocean floor. The stellar cast includes Kim Hye-soo, Yeom Jeong-ah, Zo In-sung, Park Jung-mi, and Go Min-si.
With the confirmation of these summer blockbusters hitting theaters in July and August, there is a renewed sense of optimism that ticket sales will rebound to pre-pandemic levels. Concerns have been raised about the resurgence of local cinemas amidst the growing popularity of streaming services like Netflix.
In a year that has seen lackluster box office results for the majority of films released so far, only three productions managed to attract more than 1 million moviegoers. "The Point Men," starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin, and "Dream," featuring Park Seo-jun and IU, achieved this milestone, while "The Roundup: No Way Out" surpassed the impressive mark of 7 million admissions since its opening on May 31.
As South Korean audiences eagerly anticipate the arrival of these star-studded films, industry insiders and movie enthusiasts alike hold their breath, hoping that this summer's offerings will provide the much-needed boost to a struggling cinema industry and reignite the magic of the big screen.
