Gyeongju located Bulguksa is the capital of Korea ancient nation SILLA. It doesn't snow often in this city. 'Snow Falling on Bulguksa Temple' (1996) depicts the scene where he happened to see snow at dawn after staying at Bulguksa Temple for a year. ‘Namsan in Gyeongju(2017)’ captures the scenery of the mountains and forests of Gyeongju, where the spirit of SILLA resides. ‘Diamond Mountain(2004)’ is a work depicting the Geumgang mountains, a famous mountain in North Korea. He visited the mountains several times with his friends. This work is the painting based on his experience and added his imagination of Geumgang mountians. The artist's gaze from the sky is impressive.

Park Dae-sung was born at Chungdo in 1945, the end of Japanese colonization of Korea. He studied painting for himself, despite the loss of his parents and his left arm as a child.

As a result of these efforts, He won the National Art Competition for the eighth time in a row, and won the grand prize at the Chungang art Competition in 1979. Since then, he has solidified his position as a painter by working as an exclusive painter for Samsung which is a famous Korean company. In particular, After realizing Korean modernism in New York in 1994, he stayed in Gyeongju and immersed himself in ink painting.

He expresses traditional Korean materials in a modern way through the concentration and expression method of ink and dynamic composition of objects. He said that “Ink-and-water painting is an expression not only abstract but also conception. Beauty of margin and line-oriented painting is an abstract element. The object itself is a conception. that is the similarity with modernism”.

Park Dae-sung said in a recent ABC interview, “I hope visitors will enjoy Korean aesthetics through this exhibition”.

This exhibition runs until December 11th. After that, exhibitions will continue at Harvard University's Korea Institute (CGIS), the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and the University of Mary Washington.
