In a groundbreaking exhibition entitled "Dark Waters," the iconic works of JMW Turner are presented in a whole new light, accompanied by an immersive sound environment crafted by artist and musician, Lamin Fofana. For the first time, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Turner's masterpieces within Fofana's mesmerizing auditory realm.
Despite their distinct artistic eras, both Turner and Fofana delve into the profound influence and politics of the ocean, exploring its intricate relationship with capitalism and colonialism. Turner's renowned paintings poignantly depict the perils of the British coastline's treacherous waters, while Fofana's evocative soundscapes extend their gaze across the Atlantic.

Situated on Liverpool's waterfront, the Tate Liverpool offers an ideal backdrop for this immersive exhibition, providing a rich context to reevaluate Turner's legacy. The showcase encompasses not only Turner's celebrated seascapes but also his sketchbooks and works on paper, offering a comprehensive exploration of his artistic vision.
Lamin Fofana, known for translating the writings of pioneering Black authors into immersive soundscapes, delves into themes of movement, migration, alienation, and belonging in his work. Together with Turner's evocative artworks, Fofana's soundscapes provide a thought-provoking and multisensory experience for visitors.
The exhibition started on September 27, 2022 and runs until September 24, 2023.
