Kukje Gallery
Kukje Gallery, in collaboration with Alexander Calder's legacy, proudly presents "CALDER," a major exhibition featuring some of the influential 20th-century artist's most iconic works. From April 4 to May 28, 2023, visitors to spaces K3 and K2 had the opportunity to explore Calder's innovative sculptures, including his famous mobiles, standing mobiles, and striking bronze and paper sculptures. The exhibition focuses on Calder's prolific period from the 1940s to the 1970s, and has garnered Calder's much-anticipated return to Kukje Gallery after his last showcase in 2014. In an abstract form that vitalizes and connects spaces, Calder's sculptures captivate the audience with poetic lightness and philosophical depth, embodying the modern ideal of freedom and sophistication.

As a pivotal figure bridging European modernism and early American avant-garde, Calder played an important role in shaping the art world. Described by Marcel Duchamp as a "mobile" (a pun in French for both "movement" and "motivation"), his kinetic works have garnered him international acclaim. Beginning in the late 1920s, Calder's ever-evolving approach to sculpture and his diverse visual vocabulary revolutionized art history and left a lasting impact on generations of contemporary artists around the world.
Kukje Gallery's exhibition focused on the artist's mastery of movement and the profound influence of gesture and intuition on his work. Known for their unexpected and graceful rotation, Calder's mobiles expand the sphere of sculpture, enlivening not only the surrounding environment but also the elegantly suspended air. In a poetic fusion of form and movement, Calder's work captures the viewer's attention and evokes a truly unique perceptual response. The 2018 Calder: Hypermobility Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition highlights this unique performativity, depicting Calder's art as a captivating interplay of unique movement and the resulting sensory experience.
