NCT Dream, the popular K-pop boy band, has taken the South Korean music scene by storm with their highly anticipated third studio album, "ISTJ." Breaking away from their previous energetic image, the group embraces the current trend of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and incorporates it as the main concept for their latest release. With a hybrid hip-hop dance track titled "ISTJ," the band aims to challenge stereotypes associated with personality types while showcasing their growth as artists. The album, which includes ten captivating tracks, has already shattered records, amassing over 4.5 million pre-orders, a remarkable feat for NCT Dream.
During a press conference held in Seoul on Monday, Mark Lee of NCT Dream expressed the group's excitement about the album's concept, stating, "We loved the concept as MBTI is trending in Korea and we wanted to introduce the trend to people around the world. Not only is the song great but also is the performance." Produced by Kenzie, the title track "ISTJ" carries a powerful message about breaking free from MBTI stereotypes and redefining one's identity as an ISTJ personality in their own unique way.
The music video for "ISTJ" takes viewers on a visually stunning journey through various locations, symbolized by an ambulance, drawing inspiration from the iconic movie "Back to the Future." Jaemin shared, "We showcase diverse outfits that fit the diverse settings including a hospital, a maze, and a surgery room. We love how the final product came out."
NCT Dream's decision to explore a more mature side in their music has resonated with fans, evident in the overwhelming pre-order numbers. Jeno explained, "We used to show the bright and energetic side of ourselves in our previous albums, but in this one, we wanted to show a more mature version of ourselves." The album also features notable tracks such as "Broken Melodies," released prior to the album's launch, and three additional sidetracks, namely "Blue Wave," "SOS," and "Like We Just Met."
"Blue Wave," the third track on the album, is a delightful summer song that falls under the media pop genre. Mark Lee shared, "It is a sequel to the sidetrack 'Dive Into You' from our first studio album. The chorus is really fast and rhythmic, and you can feel our bright energy." Meanwhile, "SOS" delivers a powerful hip-hop dance experience with its intense synth sounds. Jisung eagerly expressed his love for the track, stating, "It is a bit dark, the kind of music we've never done before, and the performance is outstanding. I think our fans will love seeing a new facet of us through this track."
One of the sidetracks, "Like We Just Met," holds special meaning for NCT Dream as it reflects their deep appreciation for their fans and their desire to remain connected forever. Chenle revealed, "All seven of us took part in writing the lyrics to this song. We had a lot of meetings until we came up with the final lyrics. I think the words are really sincere, and the melody of this ballad is good as well."
NCT Dream recently concluded their first world tour, "The Dream Show 2: In A Dream," which kicked off in Seoul last year. Renjun expressed his gratitude for the experience, stating, "It was an honor to meet our fans around the world. I learned to focus on every performance I do on stage to deliver my emotions better to the audience through this world tour. I also got to experience diverse cultures by touring different countries."
As NCT Dream celebrates their seventh debut anniversary, a crucial milestone for most K-pop idols, the group emphasizes their unity and commitment to each other. Jeno reflected on their journey, stating, "We came this far because we were lucky to be teamed up with these members. We know a lot about each other and we shine when we are all together. We try to communicate more these days to present better albums."
