Lygia Pape's first solo exhibition in Asia, a pioneer and mother of Brazil's contemporary art world, will be held at White Cube Seoul.
Lygia was born in 1927 in Nova Friburgu, Brazil, and became an adult at the end of World War II, studying art at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art from the early 50s.

Since then, she has formed 'Gruppo Frente' with several avant-garde artists and was greatly influenced by 'Concrete Art', which has gained great popularity since the 1930s. Since then, they have rejected the customs of Brazilian modern art at the time, which were biased toward figurative art, and pursued geometric abstraction.
Since then, Lygia has advocated the Neo-Concrete Movement with Hélio Oiticica and Ligya Clark, spreading the culture of concrete art through it.

This exhibition was designed to shed light on the artist's artistic journey of the past 50 years or so. Since the artist died in 2004, a new form of abstraction that explores the spatial dynamics between her work and the audience has been constantly in the spotlight.
The solo exhibition, which will be held at White Cube Seoul, features a variety of works ranging from her paintings, prints, sculptures, films, performances, and installations.

The highlight of this exhibition is 'Ttéia 1, B (2000)', a work specifying a location in a series of Ttéia completed in the latter half of her life. The work is intersected in rows at a corner of the gallery, where a tightly pulled gold thread forms a pillar of light.
This work is reminiscent of the structure of geometric weaving that stands out in her previous works, the painting 'Techelares' and the painting 'Desenhos'. Also, the series is the artist's representative work, symbolically showing the fruits of her exploration of geometric abstraction that she devoted her life to.
The solo exhibition will be held at White Cube Seoul in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, until May 25.
