From September 4 to 7, 2024, Frieze Seoul will host the Asian debut of DOKU The Flow, the latest work by Shanghai and Tokyo-based artist Lu Yang. This presentation, featured at PARCEL’s Booth F6, marks the second appearance of PARCEL at Frieze Seoul.

Lu Yang, a multimedia artist who graduated from the New Media Art Department of the China Academy of Art, is known for intricate use of advanced digital technologies. The artist's multidisciplinary practice often involves collaborations with designers, composers, psychologists, dancers, engineers, and scientists, creating immersive video installations set in fantastical virtual worlds.

These worlds blend Japanese popular culture—such as video games, manga, anime, and pop music—with Buddhist spirituality, transhumanist theories, and neuroscientific research. Through this unique fusion, Lu Yang crafts hybrid creatures that transcend traditional concepts of identity, probing the nature of human existence in the 21st century.

DOKU The Flow is the second chapter in Lu Yang’s “DOKU” series, which features the new adventures of DOKU, a virtual entity meticulously crafted from the artist's digitized form. The character draws inspiration from the Japanese phrase "Dokusho Dokushi," meaning "We are born alone, and we die alone." The work is deeply influenced by the Madhyamika school of Buddhist philosophy, which posits that all things lack inherent nature, substance, and essence.

Through intricate 3D animations presented in non-linear sequences, DOKU The Flow explores these themes by transitioning between various digital personas, transcending conventional reality to engage with the profound concept of emptiness.

This piece was first unveiled at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in April 2024 and is now being showcased in Asia for the first time. By focusing on the digital embodiment of DOKU, the artist challenges viewers to reflect on the essence of existence and identity in an increasingly digital world.

Frieze Seoul 2024 has established itself as a significant event in the Asian art market, and Lu Yang’s work is anticipated to be one of its highlights. PARCEL aims to introduce the artist's distinctive vision to a broader Asian audience, further expanding the reach of this groundbreaking work.
