Sauvageau's educational foundation in journalism was built at the University of Nevada, Reno, where she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism. Her academic pursuits also included minors in cultural anthropology and political science, providing her with a well-rounded perspective that enhances her reporting capabilities. This diverse educational background has proven valuable throughout her varied career in Nevada journalism.
Her professional journey began with freelance work for This is Reno while simultaneously serving as the managing editor for the Center for Basque Studies Press. This dual role allowed her to gain experience in both reporting and editorial management early in her career. Her transition into full-time journalism started as an internship with The Nevada Independent, where she developed expertise covering housing issues, rural communities, and local government affairs throughout 2022.
Sauvageau's dedication to journalism was recognized in 2023 when she became a Poynter-Koch Fellow, a prestigious opportunity that enabled her to continue her work at The Nevada Independent until June 2024. During this period, she expanded her coverage to include high-profile assignments, including reporting on the Murdoch trial, while also managing four newspapers in rural Nevada and contributing to both local and international publications on topics ranging from art to housing issues.
