Knotwork artist and gemologist Soung Ouck An is presenting her first solo exhibition, Knots, Connecting Time, through Nov. 9.

The exhibition brings together works that combine traditional Korean knotting techniques with gemstones and natural stones. An approaches the knot not only as a decorative craft method but also as a visual structure formed through repeated labor.

A single thread becomes a knot, and individual knots accumulate into a larger composition. The time required to repeat this process remains embedded in the finished work, making the knot a record of both physical action and concentration.

An’s practice is shaped by her two professional roles. As a gemologist, she studies the individual characteristics, colour and material value of stones. As a jewelry knotwork artist, she examines how thread can be organised into sculptural forms.

The resulting works bring together materials with contrasting properties. Flexible thread is placed alongside solid gemstones, while the inherited forms of traditional knotwork are adapted to contemporary jewelry and object-making.

Rather than treating gemstones as isolated decorative elements, An incorporates their natural colour and depth into the structure of each work. The stones and knots operate together, with neither material functioning solely as an accessory to the other.

Knots, Connecting Time marks An’s attempt to move traditional knotwork beyond the category of ornament and into a broader field of artistic form. The exhibition focuses on how a technique associated with functional and decorative objects can be reorganised through scale, composition and material contrast.

The title refers to the way knots physically connect separate strands while also joining different periods of time. Traditional knowledge, the duration of handwork and the viewer’s present encounter with the object converge within each piece.

Born in Suwon in 1969, An is a member of the Korea New Art Association, the Korea-China Art and Cultural Exchange Association and the Asia International Art Association. She has also participated as an invited artist in the 31st Seoul International Formative Arts Exhibition.

Knots, Connecting Time runs from Nov. 4 through Nov. 9, 2026.
