Hasla International Festival of the Arts Sets 10-Day Gangneung Program

The 2026 Hasla International Festival of the Arts will take place at Gangneung Arts Center and other locations across Gangneung from Oct. 16–25.
Jointly organised by the Hasla International Festival of the Arts and Gangneung Arts Center, the festival returns for its third edition under the theme “Love and Friendship.” Its program combines classical music with Korean traditional music, dance and illusion.
The opening concert, “Fateful Love,” will feature violinist Fumiaki Miura and cellist Young Song performing Brahms’s Double Concerto with the Gangneung Symphony Orchestra under conductor Min Chung. The orchestra will also perform Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.
Pianist Jae-Hyuck Cho, the festival’s artistic director, will give the world premiere of Texu Kim’s piano concerto “Beyond the Interior.” The work was commissioned by the festival.
The Barbican Quartet will appear in “Four Voices, One Heart,” billed by the organisers as the ensemble’s first performance in Korea. The program will focus on Schumann’s string-quartet repertoire and also feature soprano Lee Myung-joo and pianist Moon Jeong-jae.
Two productions will bring together different performance genres. “Hasla’s Light: Lee Eun-gyeol X Jae-Hyuck Cho” combines illusion with music including Debussy’s “Clair de lune.”
“The Gesture of Sound,” involving choreographer Yoo Hoi-woong, composer Kim Young-sang and traditional Korean music ensemble Seo Eui-cheol Gadan, will also receive its world premiere. The production combines Korean traditional music, classical music and dance.
Two concerts have been programmed for children and families. Seo Eui-cheol Gadan will present a child-oriented pansori adaptation of the rabbit story from the Korean tale “Sugungga.” A second concert featuring Cho, pianist Moon Jeong-jae and the Allkidstra Ensemble will be open to audiences of all ages.
The closing concert, marking the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and France, will feature pianist Kun-Woo Paik and the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra under Adrien Perruchon. The program includes Vincent d’Indy’s “Symphony on a French Mountain Air” and Debussy’s “La mer.”
The festival’s outreach series, “Our Music Festival,” will run from Oct. 15–24. Seven free performances will be held at locations including Chodang Catholic Church, Gangneung Asan Hospital, Gangneung City Hall, the Gangneung Daedohobu Government Office, Arte Museum Gangneung and the Solol branch of the Gangneung Museum of Art.
