A striking contemporary residence in Ferrol, Spain, demonstrates how thoughtful architectural design can maximize natural views while providing protection from harsh weather conditions. House LD, completed in 2023 by SEA Arquitectos, spans 345 square meters and showcases an innovative L-shaped floor plan that creates optimal living conditions on a challenging sloped site.
The residential project takes full advantage of its elevated position, offering excellent views toward A Coruña to the north. The architects strategically designed the house to create a protected microenvironment from the dominant northeast winds while opening completely to the south toward the porch and pool areas. This careful orientation allows residents to enjoy both spectacular landscape views and comfortable outdoor living spaces.
The home's design philosophy centers on north-south spatial continuity, creating a practically open-plan living area that maximizes natural light throughout the day. The main living spaces are illuminated from the south, opening directly to the sun, porch, and swimming pool, while simultaneously capturing the best panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This seamless indoor-outdoor connection enhances the overall living experience and creates a sense of spaciousness.
Addressing the steep slope of the terrain, the architects elevated the house to enhance the commanding views and establish a strong connection between the interior living areas and the southern-facing pool area. The distinctive L-shaped floor plan serves a dual purpose: providing effective wind protection and creating a beneficial microclimate for outdoor activities and relaxation.
The interior layout thoughtfully separates public and private spaces across the ground floor level. The night areas, including bedrooms, are positioned to provide privacy while receiving optimal east orientation for morning sunlight. Meanwhile, the day areas benefit from south and west orientations, ensuring natural light throughout most of the day and creating comfortable spaces for daily activities and entertaining.

The project represents a successful integration of environmental considerations, functional planning, and modern aesthetic principles in Spanish residential design.
