The School of Visual Arts (SVA) is presenting "Wavelengths," a comprehensive group exhibition featuring recent graduates from across the college's diverse programs. The juried survey showcases artwork selected by a distinguished panel of renowned alumni practitioners, each recognized as experts in their respective creative fields.
The exhibition spans an impressive range of artistic materials and conceptual approaches, with particular emphasis on process-based practices and the exploration of finding joy amid challenging circumstances. Artists featured in the show work across multiple disciplines, from traditional drawing and painting to sculpture, as well as new and mixed media installations. This diversity demonstrates the remarkable breadth and variety within SVA's extensive alumni network.
The exhibition captures these emerging artists at a pivotal moment in their creative journeys, as they continue to develop and refine their artistic practices. Many are still building upon the foundational skills they developed during their time at SVA while simultaneously responding to unexpected challenges and opportunities in their professional lives.
"Wavelengths" is currently on display at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, located on the 15th floor of 601 West 26th Street in Manhattan. The exhibition will remain open to the public through December 6, 2025, providing an extended opportunity for visitors to experience this diverse collection of contemporary artwork.
The participating artists represent graduates from both undergraduate and graduate programs spanning nearly a decade. They include Gabrielle Benak (BFA 2019, Fine Arts), Alex Cassetti (BFA 2016, Photography and Video), Sophy Chang (BFA 2019, Fine Arts), Jeong Hur (MFA 2020, Photography, Video, and Related Media), and Ray Hwang (BFA 2016, Illustration). This selection represents graduates from multiple SVA departments, including Fine Arts, Photography and Video, Illustration, Art Practice, and the specialized Illustration as Visual Essay program.
To complement the exhibition, SVA has organized special programming designed to engage both the art community and the general public. On Tuesday, November 11, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, the gallery will host an Artist Career Roundtable discussion at the exhibition venue. This educational event will feature four of the exhibiting artists: Gabrielle Benak, Alex Cassetti, Vanessa Powers, and Carra Seals, who will share insights about their artistic journeys and professional experiences since graduating from SVA.
The roundtable discussion will be moderated by Dr. Sohee Koo, a respected faculty member at SVA who brings extensive knowledge of contemporary art practices and career development in the creative fields. The event is free of charge and open to all members of the public, making it accessible to aspiring artists, current students, and art enthusiasts interested in learning about the realities of building a sustainable artistic career. Those interested in attending or seeking additional information about the exhibition and related programming can visit the official SVA website at sva.edu for complete details and any updates to the schedule.
