Street photographer Phil Penman, who has called New York City home since the early 2000s, has expanded his artistic vision beyond the Big Apple to capture the essence of urban life in cities around the world. His latest project showcases the photographer's ability to transform ordinary street scenes into extraordinary visual narratives that reveal the soul of metropolitan life.

Penman specializes in documenting the rhythm and pulse of city life, turning everyday moments into magnificent compositions through his keen eye for interesting frames and captivating light. "A scene has to evoke an emotional response in me," the photographer explains about his approach to selecting shots. "I have to be able to feel something, whether it's a father holding his daughter's hand or the feeling of being totally alive while walking through a snowstorm. Then my job is to capture that feeling and make it seem like you are there with me."

The photographer's new book, titled "Street Scenes," represents a comprehensive collection of his work spanning from 2004 to the present day. The book features photographs taken in an impressive array of international locations, including Basel, Berlin, Biel-Bienne, Boston, Cologne, Dorset, Frankfurt, India, London, Melbourne, Naples, Paris, Rome, Sydney, Tokyo, Zurich, and of course, New York City. "My first two books centered on New York City, a place I live and love," Penman tells PetaPixel. "Street Scenes was an opportunity to showcase the work I've accumulated from 2004 to the present day. As a working photographer, I've been fortunate enough to visit many beautiful places – often on someone else's expense account!"

Penman has become widely recognized for his distinctive black and white photography style, with his Instagram page notably lacking any trace of color. This artistic choice stems largely from his deep affection for the Leica Monochrom camera, which has become his signature tool. "People always ask if I shoot in color, when in fact, I've probably shot more color in my lifetime than black and white," he reveals. "Still, the Monochrom is my baby and is never far away."

One of the most challenging aspects of creating "Street Scenes" was selecting the perfect cover image, according to Penman. Ironically, the final choice was one of his rare photographs that incorporates a touch of color, breaking from his typical monochromatic aesthetic. "I think we went through 30 different covers before landing on one of my favorite shots," says Penman. "The key to producing a book is being part of a great team. My name is on it, but it wouldn't have been possible without everyone who put so much work into it."

When discussing his influences and inspiration, Penman shared his list of top five street photographers who have shaped his artistic vision. His selections include Elliott Erwitt, Bruce Davidson, André Kertész, Diane Arbus, and Saul Leiter – all legendary figures in the world of street photography who have contributed significantly to the art form's development and recognition.

"Street Scenes" is published by teNeues and is available through Amazon and other major retailers. Photography enthusiasts and fans of Penman's work can explore more of his portfolio on his Instagram account and official website, where his ongoing documentation of urban life continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
