A striking residential project in Cyprus showcases how modern architecture can emerge organically from the landscape that surrounds it. The Homa House, designed by HOMA Studio and completed in 2024, represents a thoughtful exploration of contemporary living that draws directly from its natural environment.
The 170-square-meter residence features three monolithic volumes that rise from the earth, their exterior tones carefully selected to mirror the soil from which they spring. This architectural approach creates a seamless connection between the built environment and the natural landscape, establishing the foundation for what the architects describe as a home that is "fully protected, quietly experimental, and unfolding through a series of nuanced and intriguing moments."
Two precisely carved openings in these massive forms create both an entrance and a passage that leads visitors into the heart of the house. This central courtyard serves as a contemporary interpretation of traditional family gathering spaces, offering both welcome and mystery to those who enter. The design strategy transforms what could be a severe exterior into something more approachable and human-scaled.
The project team included comprehensive expertise across multiple disciplines. Lefteris Kaimakliotis handled architectural and interior design, landscape design, lighting design, construction detailing, project management, and site supervision. DK E.P.S. provided structural and civil engineering services, while A.D. Tzitzimbourounis Consulting Engineers managed mechanical systems and Mita E. Consulting Engineers handled electrical design.
Beyond the entrance threshold, the robust exterior walls create a delicate interplay of light and shadow throughout the interior spaces. Natural lighting combines with carefully framed views of the sky to guide occupants through the home's spatial sequence. This journey moves gradually from private bedroom areas through semi-private zones and ultimately to communal living spaces, creating what the architects call "a gradient that moves from private sanctuaries to communal spaces."
The interior design emphasizes warmth and distinct character, where landscape and architecture merge effortlessly. A long corridor extends through the three volumes, ultimately terminating in a veranda that serves to bind the entire composition together. This circulation strategy creates spaces that the design team describes as "imbued with understated charm and richness."
Photography by TANG Photography captures how the seemingly severe monolithic exterior yields to interiors marked by natural materials and carefully controlled lighting conditions. The project utilized products from several key manufacturers, including Rabel Aluminium Systems for window and door systems, Interkitchen for kitchen components, and specialized lighting from The Light Point.
The Homa House represents what its architects call "a contemporary reinterpretation of tradition," offering a carefully considered architectural composition that provides a refined living environment for its residents. The project demonstrates how modern residential architecture can be both protective and inviting while maintaining a quiet sense of purpose rooted in its specific place and cultural context.
