Studio Dot has completed a remarkable weekend retreat in Bharuch, Gujarat, that exemplifies sustainable architecture through its harmonious integration with the existing landscape. The Tibdewal Weekend Home, covering 1,400 square feet and completed in 2022, represents a thoughtful approach to residential design that prioritizes environmental preservation over conventional construction practices.
The project's defining characteristic lies in its respectful relationship with mature fruit-bearing trees that were already established on the site. Rather than clearing the land for construction, architect Satya Vaghela and the design team at Studio Dot conceived the house as a curving form that gently weaves around the existing canopy of mango (Mangifera indica), chickoo (Manilkara zapota), and jamun (Syzygium cumini) trees. This design philosophy allowed the architecture and landscape to remain in continuous dialogue throughout the construction process.
Located on the outskirts of Bharuch in western India, the weekend home grows organically from the land as much as it rests upon it. The architectural form was entirely defined by the presence of these mature trees from the very beginning of the design process. Lead architect Satya Vaghela explained that the house was envisioned as a structure that would complement rather than compete with the natural environment, resulting in a building that appears to emerge naturally from its surroundings.
