Developer Richmind has partnered with executive architects Dewan Architects & Engineers to commission world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects for the design of the Oystra development in the United Arab Emirates. The ambitious project features a striking 40-meter curved steel truss that dramatically spans two towers, creating a sculptural architectural statement on Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah.
The massive 128,000 square-meter development sits strategically positioned to overlook the gulf with its distinctive undulating shape. Oystra comprises four interconnected towers that will house more than 800 apartments, along with luxury penthouses, sky villas, and standalone waterfront villas. The project represents Richmind's strategic shift toward developing original spaces with strong artistic intent, pushing architectural boundaries through high-quality developments designed by globally leading practices.
According to Dewan Architects & Engineers CEO Ammar Alassam, the project prioritizes enhancing "the human experience" through thoughtful architectural design that shapes and supports people's lifestyles. "For us, design is not a decorative layer but a fundamental driver of value, shaping how people live, feel, and interact with their surroundings," Alassam explained. He emphasized that Zaha Hadid Architects conceived Oystra as "a seamless convergence of form, movement, and environment – a composition of sculptural geometries shaped by the natural rhythms of sea and sky."
Richmind CEO Mohammad Rafiee told Dezeen that Oystra exemplifies the company's reimagined vision of luxury in the built environment. "Projects like Oystra exemplify our belief that true luxury lies in singularity – spaces that are emotionally resonant, experientially rich, and immediately recognizable," Rafiee stated. The development was specifically designed to be instantly recognizable while seamlessly integrating with its coastal surroundings.
Construction is scheduled to commence this year, with Rafiee expressing confidence that once completed, Oystra will appear as though it has always belonged on the site. "What sets Richmind apart is our commitment to creating ambitious and aesthetically striking developments that are seen more as works of art than just structures – regardless of location or market comparisons," he added, reinforcing the project's artistic vision.
The project's most notable engineering feat is the 40-meter curved steel truss that spans two of Oystra's towers. Alassam explained that this structural innovation preserves "a continuous visual rhythm across the skyline, enabling both spatial drama and structural stability." The technical team played an instrumental role in safeguarding the architectural narrative while embracing the complexity of curved, walkable structural walls rather than compromising the design for construction ease.
Alassam views the project as evidence that UAE locations are increasingly suitable for ambitious projects by internationally acclaimed architects, or "starchitects." He believes Oystra represents "a shift in the regional architectural landscape – a maturation of the collaborative model where design excellence is no longer bound by geography." The project demonstrates that cities like Ras Al Khaimah are emerging as credible hosts for global design experimentation, supported by forward-thinking clients like Richmind who invest in culturally enriching developments and champion visionary architecture.
The Oystra development stands as a testament to the successful collaboration between Richmind's vision, Dewan Architects & Engineers' technical expertise, and Zaha Hadid Architects' innovative design philosophy. Once completed, the project is expected to become a landmark architectural achievement that redefines luxury living while harmonizing with its pristine waterfront environment.
