Norwegian photographer and director Sølve Sundsbø has created the 52nd edition of the Pirelli Calendar for 2026, featuring a groundbreaking visual approach that explores the relationship between nature and humanity. His artistic vision focused on photographing mature women with experience and depth, moving beyond traditional calendar concepts to create something more meaningful and profound.
Sundsbø's creative process began with extensive nature photography at Holkham Beach in Norfolk and throughout the Essex countryside in April. The photographer then transitioned his work to studios in London and New York, where he employed cutting-edge technology to bring his vision to life. Using massive LED screens as backdrops, he projected the natural imagery he had captured – sunsets, clouds, fire, and water – to create stunning visual environments for his subjects.
"The calendar goes beyond the traditional four elements," Sundsbø explained. "I didn't want to stay too literal, but rather capture emotions, instincts, and states of mind that are central to human life. The desire for freedom, curiosity, thirst for knowledge – that's how you could describe it." His protagonists symbolically embody not only the natural elements of earth, air, fire, and water, but also immaterial forces such as energy, ether, and light.
The 2026 calendar features 22 stunning photographs showcasing eleven extraordinary women from film, fashion, sports, and music. The impressive lineup includes Scottish actress Tilda Swinton, British actress Gwendoline Christie, and British singer-songwriter FKA twigs. Italian-American actress and filmmaker Isabella Rossellini brings her legendary presence to the project, while American tennis champion Venus Williams represents the world of sports.
The fashion and modeling world is represented by several notable figures, including British fashion designer and model Susie Cave, who previously appeared in Helmut Newton's 1986 Pirelli Calendar and Clive Arrowsmith's 1991 edition. Italian actress Luisa Ranieri, Russian supermodel Irina Shayk, and Chinese model and actress Du Juan – who was featured in Patrick Demarchelier's 2008 calendar – also grace the pages.
Completing the diverse cast are Czech supermodel Eva Herzigová, who previously appeared in Peter Lindbergh's 1996 edition and Bruce Weber's 1998 version, and Puerto Rican actress Adria Arjona. Each woman was carefully chosen to embody specific elements, with Sundsbø capturing their unique emotions and physicality while they represented their assigned natural forces.
The photographer's innovative approach combined his passion for technology with his artistic vision, creating portraits that transcend traditional fashion photography. By having each figure embody a specific element, Sundsbø was able to shape their individual portraits while capturing the essence of their personality and the natural force they represented. This groundbreaking 2026 Pirelli Calendar represents a bold new direction in the calendar's storied history, celebrating the power, wisdom, and beauty of accomplished women.
