Danish industrial designer Thomas Bentzen has created an innovative storage solution that combines functionality with sustainability. The Sketch Toolbox, despite its playful house-shaped design, represents a sophisticated approach to desktop organization and environmental responsibility.
The toolbox's distinctive sloped sides create three compartments of varying depths, allowing users to easily view and access their contents. This house-like form factor is not merely aesthetic but serves a practical purpose in maximizing storage efficiency while maintaining visual accessibility to stored items.
What sets this design apart is its manufacturing process and environmental credentials. The entire toolbox is constructed from a single piece of ABS plastic, with 91 percent of the material sourced from post-industrial waste. "It is a monolithic piece – a technical feature that took years of development – meaning it is casted in one piece and in one material without using glue or screws," Bentzen explains.
The designer emphasizes the complexity behind the seemingly simple construction. "A process as simple as can be, yet immensely complex to produce. This makes it a truly solid piece made to last, just like we want a house to be," he notes. This approach eliminates the need for additional fasteners or adhesives, creating a more durable and sustainable product.
The Sketch Toolbox is being manufactured by Scandinavian design brand Muuto and is available for purchase at $65. The product represents a growing trend in industrial design where functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal converge in innovative storage solutions for creative professionals and design enthusiasts.
