A stunning contemporary residence has been completed in Malpaís, Costa Rica, showcasing innovative tropical architecture that seamlessly blends with the natural environment. House Solomia, designed by Estudio D3B Arquitectura and constructed by GFM, represents a masterful interpretation of modern tropical design principles while offering panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.
The 400-square-meter residence is strategically positioned on an elevated site characterized by dense tropical vegetation and steep slopes. The architectural team, led by Demian Bournissen with technical support from Shiary Martinez and Jose Pablo Jimenez, carefully responded to the natural conditions of the location to maximize the spectacular ocean views. The home's orientation toward the sunset formed a crucial element in the site occupation strategy.
The design features a rational and straightforward program with an distinctive L-shaped floor plan that creates clean lines traversing the landscape. This simple yet sophisticated volume combines comfort and functionality while maintaining constant connection with the surrounding tropical environment. The layout ensures that nature takes center stage throughout the living experience.
The residence is organized into different areas that operate independently yet remain connected through structural elements that maintain volumetric continuity and visual fluidity. Two arms positioned at different levels embrace the ocean view, featuring spaces with wide openings that promote cross-ventilation and blur the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces. The roof planes, though arranged autonomously, reinforce the overall geometry and emphasize the L-shape that structures the residence.
Distributed across two floors, the architectural program conceives the residence as a family home while incorporating necessary flexibility to adapt for tourist accommodation use. Upon entering the main body of the house, service areas are strategically situated opposite the ocean views, while social spaces integrate seamlessly into the tropical landscape through carefully designed terraces, gardens, and a swimming pool.
The connection between different environments occurs through fluid transitions that strengthen relationships while maintaining privacy and unique character. This design approach achieves a delicate balance between openness and intimacy. A double-height garden accommodates the staircase connecting the two levels, creating a pathway that allows visitors to appreciate the entire space and discover views from multiple angles.
