La Sapienza University of Rome recently presented a comprehensive showcase of Korean traditional arts, offering local students an immersive experience into Korea's rich cultural heritage. The event, titled "A Window into the Art of Korean Traditional Culture," took place on Friday, September 12th at the library of the Department of Oriental Studies.
The cultural presentation featured three distinct aspects of Korean traditional arts, each demonstrating the depth and variety of Korea's artistic legacy. Kim Sooho performed traditional Korean music using the daegeum, a large bamboo flute that holds significant importance in Korean classical music. The performance provided attendees with an authentic sound experience of Korea's musical traditions.
In addition to the musical presentation, students witnessed a captivating mask dance performance by Ryu Pilgi, who demonstrated talchum, a traditional Korean masked dance drama. This art form combines theatrical storytelling with dynamic choreography and has been an integral part of Korean folk culture for centuries. The performance allowed Italian students to observe the expressive movements and symbolic meanings embedded in this traditional dance form.
The event also included an interactive calligraphy workshop led by Kim Sooho, giving participants hands-on experience with Korean traditional writing arts. This component allowed students to engage directly with Korean culture by learning basic techniques and understanding the aesthetic principles behind Korean calligraphy.
