The Pina Bausch Gallery WUPPERTAL TANZT Edition 2025 project is approaching its final phase, marking the near completion of an ambitious urban art initiative that has transformed the German city of Wuppertal. The project consists of ten large-scale wall murals that have been painted throughout the year on various building facades across the city, celebrating the legacy of the world-renowned Wuppertal choreographer Pina Bausch.
The impressive murals feature portraits of Pina Bausch alongside depictions of her iconic dance performances, bringing the celebrated artist's work to the streets of her hometown. The newest mural is currently being completed on Luisenstraße, while another artwork is in progress at the chapel of the Waldfriedhof cemetery on Krummacherstraße. One final mural is planned for the Heidt area on Heinrich-Janssen-Straße, which will officially conclude the current phase of the project.
The initiative has been led by the nonprofit organization WupperOne929 Urban Art e.V., which has been creating large-scale murals by international artists in Wuppertal since 2023. The project has garnered worldwide attention, establishing Wuppertal as a significant destination for urban art enthusiasts and dance culture admirers alike.
With the completion of the current edition, the project's funding is set to expire, presenting challenges for future continuation. However, the WupperOne929 Urban Art association has expressed its commitment to continuing the initiative, though specific plans for how to proceed remain unclear at this time. The organization has indicated that donations would be welcomed to help sustain their urban art efforts and potentially expand the tribute to Pina Bausch's artistic legacy in the years to come.
