Danish architecture firm Henning Larsen has completed the World of Volvo Experience Center in Gothenburg, Sweden, a groundbreaking 22,500-square-meter facility that celebrates the heritage and future of the iconic Swedish automotive brands Volvo Cars and Volvo Group. The striking building, which opened in 2023, features an innovative timber structure designed around Scandinavian values of freedom of movement, access to nature, openness, and inclusion.
The centerpiece of the architectural design is the main timber structure, constructed from glulam and cross-laminated timber, which forms three distinctive tree-trunk-like columns that fan out to support the entire roof load. This creates a welcoming forest-like canopy that envelops visitors in a natural atmosphere, bringing a piece of Swedish nature to the heart of Gothenburg's event district. The expansive round structure encourages visitors to create their own journeys both indoors and outdoors, regardless of whether they hold tickets to the exhibition inside.
Located strategically in Gothenburg's bustling event district, the facility offers versatile spaces designed to host cultural events, talks, and conferences, with capacity for up to 1,100 attendees. The 4,500-square-meter exhibition space provides a comprehensive journey through Volvo's rich history, present innovations, and future visions. The exhibition features iconic vehicles, immersive storytelling experiences, and interactive displays, all centered around Volvo's human-centric and forward-looking ethos.
The building's commitment to sustainability is evident in its environmental certifications, having achieved both LEED Gold and WELL Gold standards. The structure is surrounded by a thriving landscape that extends onto an accessible roof, embracing the regional landscape in form, materiality, and culture. This design philosophy reflects the Scandinavian principle of 'right to nature,' ensuring that the building integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
Martin Stenberg Ringnér, Associate Design Director at Henning Larsen, expressed pride in the project's completion, stating, 'As a brand, Volvo is rooted in a Swedish pride for producing and manufacturing quality for everyone. This is spotlighted and celebrated at World of Volvo, and we are so proud to see the building come to life and welcome its first visitors on the same day as Volvo's birthday celebrations.'
The culinary experience at the center is provided by two distinctive dining venues. Ceno Brasserie welcomes all visitors, while Ceno On Top serves as an exclusive space for conference guests and larger parties. The celebrated restaurateur Götaplatsgruppen has created a culinary experience that mirrors Volvo's dedication to excellence, with award-winning signature chef Stefan Karlsson focusing on locally sourced and seasonal produce to bring the freshest flavors of the region to visitors.
The project represents a significant addition to Gothenburg's cultural landscape and serves as a testament to Swedish design excellence and innovation. The building's unique architectural approach, combining traditional Scandinavian materials with contemporary design principles, creates a space that is both functional and inspiring. The World of Volvo Experience Center stands as a celebration of Swedish automotive heritage while looking toward a sustainable and innovative future in transportation and design.
