The Korean Cultural Center in Thailand organized a special cultural celebration called "2025 Happy Chuseok in Thailand" on October 6, bringing together local participants to experience one of Korea's most significant traditional holidays. The event focused on introducing Thai visitors to the rich customs and cultural significance of Chuseok, which celebrates the autumn harvest season in Korean tradition.
Ms. Sunju Lee, Director of the Korean Cultural Center, opened the festivities with a welcoming speech that provided participants with an in-depth introduction to Korean Chuseok culture and its deep connection to celebrating the autumn harvest. During her remarks, she encouraged attendees to embrace creativity in their cultural experience, specifically inviting them to feel comfortable creating Thai-style songpyeon, the traditional rice cake associated with Chuseok celebrations. Lee emphasized that songpyeon can vary significantly in both shape and ingredients depending on the region, allowing for cultural adaptation and personal creativity.
The centerpiece of the event was a hands-on songpyeon-making workshop, where participants learned the traditional techniques for creating these special rice cakes that are central to Chuseok celebrations. This interactive experience allowed Thai visitors to engage directly with Korean culinary traditions while adding their own cultural touches to the traditional recipe.
Beyond the songpyeon workshop, the Korean Cultural Center offered a comprehensive array of Korean cultural experiences designed to provide a well-rounded introduction to Korean traditions. The activities included an engaging OX Quiz game that tested participants' knowledge of Korean culture specifically related to Chuseok customs and traditions. Attendees also had the opportunity to taste authentic songpyeon, experience wearing traditional Korean hanbok clothing, and participate in various Korean traditional games that are commonly enjoyed during festival celebrations.
The Korean Cultural Center reaffirmed its ongoing commitment to cultural exchange and education, stating that they will continue to provide more opportunities for Thai people to engage with and learn about Korean culture during upcoming festivals and celebrations. This dedication reflects the center's mission to strengthen cultural bonds between Korea and Thailand through meaningful cultural experiences and educational programs.
