A historic residential complex in Pazinos, near Chania, Crete, has been transformed into a contemporary living space that celebrates its architectural heritage through thoughtful renovation. VAstudio, a Greek architectural firm, has redesigned the property known as "Threshold" to amplify the inherent qualities of the existing structure while creating a home where daily life becomes intertwined with historical memories.
The renovated complex showcases a masterful integration of traditional materials and modern design principles. Stone walls, preserved vaulted ceilings, and carefully orchestrated light play create an atmosphere that honors the building's past while accommodating contemporary living needs. The architects organized the residence into three interconnected volumes, each strategically anchored by a reflecting pool that serves both aesthetic and functional purposes in guiding circulation throughout the property.
Situated within a picturesque village characterized by olive groves, ancient terraces, and traditional dry stone walls, Threshold engages authentically with its Mediterranean landscape. The design team utilized locally sourced materials including native stone, timber, and lime plaster to maintain harmony with the surrounding environment.
