South Korean sculptor and installation artist Choi Goen has been named the winner of Frieze Seoul’s 2024 Artist Award. This prestigious honor is presented to an emerging or mid-career artist in support of new work. Choi will unveil her project at the fair’s third edition, scheduled to take place from September 4 to 7 at the COEX Convention & Exhibition Center in Gangnam, Seoul. She follows in the footsteps of Korean artist Woo Hannah, who received the inaugural award last year.

Choi’s winning commission will be a large-scale sculptural installation. It will incorporate discarded industrial elements, including exhaust pipes and air-conditioning units. According to a press release, these elements will symbolize not only the hidden infrastructure behind our digital connections but also the complex physical materials that silently shape our urban environment. The installation aims to provide a performative experience, highlighting the ongoing relationship between art, technology, and the urban landscape.

Choi Eun’s award-winning works, “White Home Wall: Welcome” and “Gloria,” delve into the materiality implied by technology within the context of digital dominance in human life. Through large-scale installations, the artist transforms discarded industrial materials—such as exhaust pipes and air conditioning units—into art. These creations serve as both a manifestation of the hidden infrastructure behind our expansive digital realm and a reflection of the intricate material circulation within our urban environment.

A four-person jury selected Choi’s proposal. The jury members included Sungah Serena Choo, a curator at Seoul’s Leeum Museum of Art; artist Jeon Joonho; Kim Sung woo, curator and director of Seoul-based nonprofit Primary Practice; and Yung Ma, senior curator at London’s Hayward Gallery. Patrick Lee, director of Frieze Seoul, expressed heartfelt congratulations to Choi Goen, emphasizing her esteemed position in Korea’s art scene. Lee also expressed anticipation for the audience to discover more about Choi’s remarkable work.

Born in 1985 in South Korea, Choi Goen often assembles mundane household objects, such as furniture and appliances, into sculptures and installations that interact with their surroundings. Her works offer commentary on contemporary industrial society’s systems of production, distribution, disposal, and recycling. Notably, Choi has exhibited at various venues, including Art Sonje Center in Seoul (2023), Amado Art Space in Seoul (2022), Buk-Seoul Museum of Art (2022), and P21 Gallery in London (2021).
