In a recent development, South Korean police have opted to drop the charges of alleged public indecency against Hwasa, a prominent member of the K-pop girl group Mamamoo. The singer, whose real name is Ahn Hye-jin, faced controversy for her performance, deemed obscene, at a university festival in May. The performance was part of the TV program "Dancing Queens on the Road," aired on the cable channel tvN.

In June, a civic group filed a formal complaint with the police, asserting that Hwasa's act was suggestive of "perverted sexual acts sufficient to arouse shame and disgust in the public." After a thorough review, the Seongdong Police Station in Seoul decided late last month not to refer the 28-year-old artist to the prosecution. The decision came after detailed questioning of Hwasa regarding the performance and a careful review of testimonies from staff involved.
