Over the weekend, "The Boy and the Heron," the latest animated film by renowned Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki, secured the top spot at the box office, according to data reported on Monday. The Studio Ghibli production drew approximately 598,000 moviegoers from Friday to Sunday, representing a substantial 60.5 percent share of total ticket sales, as revealed by the Korean Film Council.

Released on Wednesday, the fantasy film has consistently held the leading position in the local box office rankings, amassing a cumulative total of 947,000 attendees. It is anticipated to cross the 1 million admissions mark on Monday.

Adapted from the 1937 novel "How Do You Live?" by Genzaburo Yoshino, the animation centers on the story of an 11-year-old boy named Mahito Maki. He encounters a talking heron and embarks on a journey into a fantastical realm, guided by an abandoned tower in his new town.

Meanwhile, the Korean romantic comedy "Love Reset," featuring Kang Ha-neul and Jung So-min, slipped to the second spot after enjoying a three-week reign as the box office leader since its premiere on October 3.
