A remarkable architectural transformation has taken place in Bucharest, Romania, where a tiny urban gap between two conventional residential buildings has been converted into an extraordinary café. The Chapel, designed by Ștefan Păvăluță, founder and principal architect of Romanian studio Vinklu, represents a bold example of urban innovation and creative space utilization.
The single-story contemporary structure features a distinctive steep triangular roofline and sleek modern fixtures that make a striking visual statement despite its extremely narrow footprint. Rather than viewing the limited width as a constraint, the design celebrates this characteristic through thoughtful proportions, carefully selected materials, and extensive use of windows that maximize natural light and create visual connections to the surrounding environment.
The building serves as home to Boiler, a local coffee shop that maximizes every square foot of available space. The interior is compact yet functional, providing just enough room for a barista and a few customers to operate comfortably. To accommodate additional patrons, outdoor benches have been strategically placed to extend the seating area into the surrounding streetscape.
A significant design consideration was the presence of a large, mature tree located along the street, which played an instrumental role in shaping the architectural approach. Păvăluță emphasized the importance of achieving harmony within the constrained space by utilizing streamlined materials and emphasizing vertical height through timber finishes that create a sense of airiness and openness.
The extensive use of large glass panels serves multiple purposes, bringing the outdoor environment inside while highlighting the serene setting beneath the established tree canopy. This design strategy creates a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, making the small structure feel more expansive than its actual dimensions would suggest.
