SEOUL — Gallery Hyundai will launch the second part of its landmark anniversary exhibition, 55 Years: A Legacy of Modern & Contemporary Korean Art, on May 22, 2025. Running through July 6, the show will take place across both of the gallery’s locations on Samcheong-ro in Seoul, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s 55-year history.

Founded in 1970 under the name “Hyundai Hwarang” in Insa-dong, Gallery Hyundai has played a pivotal role in advancing the visibility of Korean artists both at home and abroad. The anniversary exhibition reflects on the gallery’s legacy of curating and promoting the works of Korea’s most influential artists, from modern masters to contemporary innovators.

The exhibition is divided between the gallery’s original space, Hyundai Hwarang (8 Samcheong-ro), and its newer location (14 Samcheong-ro). Part II highlights works by artists who have played a crucial role in shaping Korean art history, many of whom have had long-standing relationships with the gallery.

At Hyundai Hwarang, visitors will find works by pioneering modern artists such as Lee Ungno, Kim Whanki, Yoo Youngkuk, Yun Hyong-Keun, Park Seo-Bo, and Lee Ufan. These figures helped lay the foundation for Korea’s post-war art scene and have gained international recognition for their contributions.

Meanwhile, the newer Gallery Hyundai space will feature contemporary artists including Minjung Kim, Ik-Joong Kang, Ayoung Kim, Christine Sun Kim, and Moon Kyungwon, representing the evolving landscape of Korean contemporary art and its expanding global relevance.

As one of Korea’s most enduring private art galleries, Gallery Hyundai’s anniversary exhibition serves not only as a retrospective but also as a platform for dialogue between generations of Korean artists. The show invites viewers to explore the trajectory of Korean modern and contemporary art through the lens of the gallery’s decades-long commitment to artistic excellence.
