Kakao Entertainment, the content arm of Korea's IT giant Kakao Corp., confirmed on Friday the release of a spin-off webtoon series based on the Netflix original "Gyeongseong Creature." The webtoon series is scheduled to debut on Kakao Webtoon and KakaoPage on January 20.
Netflix's "Gyeongseong Creature," a 10-part thriller drama, revolves around the characters Jang Tae-sang (Park Seo-jun) and Yoon Chae-ok (Han So-hee) infiltrating a hospital in Gyeongseong (now Seoul) in 1945, where human experiments transform people into monsters.
The spin-off webtoon, titled "Gyeongseong Creature: The Unwithering Flower," unfolds in the setting of Manwoldo, another location for human experiments. The narrative follows Geum-ran, who undergoes the same experiment but transforms into a powerful being with human intelligence instead of becoming a monster.
Kakao Entertainment emphasized a new narrative with a focus on different characters within a connected universe. Characters like Chae-ok and Gato from the Netflix series will make appearances in the webtoon, contributing to an intersecting plot that enriches and completes the overall storyline.
Following the domestic launch on January 20, the webtoon series is set to be released in North America, Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia through Kakao Entertainment's global webtoon platforms, including Tapas and Kakao Webtoon Thailand. Specific release dates for these regions are yet to be confirmed.
Kakao Entertainment expressed its commitment to enhancing global intellectual property (IP) competitiveness, highlighting efforts to adapt webtoons and web novels like "Moving," "The Uncanny Counter," and "The Bequeathed" into visual content. The company aims to strengthen its IP value chain, connecting stories and media in cases such as "Gyeongseong Creature," "Business Proposal," and "Not Others."
In anticipation of the webtoon series launch on January 20 and the release of Part 2 of the "Gyeongseong Creature" drama series, KakaoPage and Kakao Webtoon are conducting an event offering special kits, including vouchers for the webtoon platform, to users who sign up for launch notifications. Additionally, KakaoPage is holding a draw for users who share the webtoon launch news, with a chance to win a collaboration tea set between "Gyeongseong Creature" and Osulloc.
