A massive graffiti artwork covering approximately 250 square meters now adorns the wall of an EAM power substation in Göttingen, Germany, creating what is likely the city's largest mural. The impressive street art project was completed by local graffiti artists Matthias Mau, Dennis Mau, and Agatha Czarny, transforming a previously drab gray building into a vibrant piece of public art.
The ambitious project was initiated by AquARTisch, a group that formed during the Youth Congress on Biodiversity 2024/25 organized by the German Federal Environmental Foundation. According to graffiti artist Matthias Mau, the EAM energy company provided the building wall for the artistic endeavor. AquARTisch aims to promote biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems by bringing environmental themes into urban spaces through street art.
The project received significant funding support from both the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation and the German Federal Environmental Foundation. The collaborative effort demonstrates how environmental advocacy can merge with urban art to create meaningful public installations that raise awareness about biodiversity conservation.
The AquARTisch team reached out to three Göttingen-based street art artists who brought the vision to life over the course of more than a week. The artists used two hydraulic lifts to access the upper sections of the wall, reaching heights of approximately seven meters. The logistical challenges of working on such a large vertical surface required careful planning and specialized equipment.
The completed mural depicts an aquatic landscape featuring various animals and sections of sewage systems, directly relating to the project's environmental mission. The artwork serves as both an aesthetic enhancement to the urban environment and an educational tool about water ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.
The EAM building, located directly next to the railway underpass on Godehardstraße, stretches approximately 38 meters in length. What was once a monotonous gray structure has been transformed into a eye-catching landmark that draws attention to environmental issues while beautifying the neighborhood.
Plans are underway for an official inauguration ceremony where the mural will be formally presented to the public. This event will likely highlight both the artistic achievement and the environmental message behind the project, celebrating the successful collaboration between environmental activists, local artists, and the energy company.
