Johyun Gallery will participate in Art Basel Hong Kong 2025, held from March 26 to 30 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC). As one of Asia’s premier international art fairs, the event will feature a curated presentation by Johyun Gallery in both the Kabinett sector and the main gallery booth, offering a comprehensive view of contemporary art’s evolving landscape.

The Kabinett sector will host a special dual exhibition featuring Kim Hong Joo and Kwon Dae Sup, both of whom have played pivotal roles in redefining Korean contemporary art. Kim Hong Joo, known for his meticulous explorations of pictorial space, deconstructs natural imagery such as flowers and leaves to challenge the distinction between reality and representation. He recently participated in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition "Lineages: Korean Art at The Met" (2023), solidifying his presence on the global stage.

Meanwhile, Kwon Dae Sup’s modern reinterpretations of traditional Korean moon jars blend minimalism with abstraction, embodying an aesthetic philosophy that values imperfection, balance, and harmony. His ceramics, characterized by their restrained forms and subtle variations in texture, have earned international acclaim for their quiet yet profound sculptural beauty.

At its main gallery booth, Johyun Gallery will present an impressive selection of modern and contemporary masters, including Park Seo-Bo, Lee Bae, Kim Chong Hak, Claude Viallat, and Kishio Suga, alongside leading contemporary artists such as Bosco Sodi, Lee Kwang Ho, Kang Kang Hoon, Jo Jong Sung, and Ahn Jisan.

The late Park Seo-Bo (1931–2024), a pioneer of Korean Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting), will be represented through selections from his "Ecriture" series, including his ceramic and color-based works, which extend his lifelong inquiry into materiality and process.

Lee Bae, internationally recognized for his charcoal-based paintings and sculptures, will showcase pieces from his "Issu du Feu" (Born from Fire) series, a meditative exploration of transformation, time, and the raw energy of materials. His works recently featured in parallel exhibitions at the 2024 Venice Biennale, further establishing his reputation in the global art scene.

Kim Chong Hak, renowned for his bold color palettes and dynamic brushwork, will present works from his recent "White Series." Known as the “Painter of Flowers,” he distills the essence of nature’s vitality through his expressive compositions. In April, he will hold a solo exhibition at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, followed by another at Johyun Gallery Busan in June.

The presentation also includes international figures such as Claude Viallat, a founding member of the Supports/Surfaces movement, who investigates the interaction between paint and textile surfaces, and Kishio Suga, a leading figure in Japan’s Mono-ha movement, whose sculptural installations explore the relationships between materials, space, and perception.

Among contemporary artists, Bosco Sodi will present a series of textured relief paintings, emphasizing materiality and vibrant pigment contrasts. Lee Kwang Ho’s "Wetland" series will introduce hyper-realistic yet abstracted landscapes, stimulating both visual and tactile sensations. Kang Kang Hoon will unveil new works from his "Cotton" series, while Jo Jong Sung will present his contemporary reinterpretation of Korean landscape painting through a multiperspective approach.

Finally, Ahn Jisan’s narrative collages will examine the fragile boundaries between life and death, inviting deeper introspection through layered compositions.

With a lineup of established masters and rising talents, Johyun Gallery’s presentation at Art Basel Hong Kong bridges historical and contemporary practices, fostering a dialogue between tradition and innovation in the global art scene.
