The production team behind MBC-TV’s 'Good Day' has announced that it will minimize actor Kim Soo Hyun’s screen time in response to ongoing public controversy.
On the 17th, the show's production team released an official statement, apologizing for any concern caused to viewers. "We deeply regret causing concern and will make every effort to address the situation appropriately," the statement read.
The controversy stems from Kim’s alleged past relationship with the late actress Kim Sae Ron during her underage years. The claims were brought to public attention through a YouTube channel run by an acquaintance of Kim Sae Ron’s mother. Further speculation arose when it was revealed that Kim Sae Ron had sent a text message in March 2023, pleading for an extension on a 7 billion KRW (approximately 5.3 million USD) debt allegedly related to Gold Medalist, her former agency.
MBC clarified why Kim Soo Hyun’s appearance had not been entirely removed from the latest broadcast. The production team explained that 'Good Day' is pre-recorded at least one to two weeks in advance due to translation requirements for overseas distribution. The episode that aired on March 16 had already undergone translation and processing before the controversy escalated, making last-minute edits a challenge.
Nonetheless, MBC confirmed that the broadcast version had been re-edited to remove as much of Kim Soo Hyun’s footage as possible before airing. As a result, the episode aired on March 16 was 10 minutes shorter than usual and lacked some of the finer details.
Regarding Kim Soo Hyun’s March 13 recording session, the team stated that they had delayed finalizing the audio recording while awaiting an official response from Kim’s agency. However, they ultimately proceeded with the recording, citing limited availability of the cast’s schedules. They further emphasized that the recording was done to minimize Kim’s presence, ensuring his segments did not overlap significantly with those of other cast members.
MBC has now committed to reducing Kim Soo Hyun’s role in future episodes. "As long as this controversy continues, it could undermine the very purpose of 'Good Day' and the sincerity of the other cast members who joined with good intentions. We have therefore decided to minimize Kim Soo Hyun’s screen time in episodes 6 and 7," the statement read. Additionally, the March 13 individual recording session featuring Kim Soo Hyun will not be aired.
The production team concluded by reaffirming their commitment to delivering enjoyable content, stating, "We will continue to work hard to create a show that brings joy to viewers while respecting the dedication of all participating cast members."
