The city of Namwon in Jeollabuk-do has announced the launch of its Glow Playground program, an interactive event blending traditional activities with modern neon art. Hosted at Namseongjae, a historic Joseon-era seodang (village school), the event will run from November 29 to December 15, offering a creative and educational experience for families and children.
The Glow Playground aims to reimagine traditional Korean pastimes through engaging, hands-on activities. Visitors can participate in classic games such as spinning tops (paeng-i chigi) and hopscotch (sa-bang chigi), or create whimsical crafts like fish-shaped hats. The highlight of the program is the opportunity to use fluorescent and glow-in-the-dark art supplies to create personalized works of art.
Adding a modern twist, the event also features an exhibition of neon and glow-in-the-dark artworks crafted by local young artists. These installations, utilizing phosphorescent materials, bring a vibrant and contemporary aesthetic to the traditional setting of Namseongjae.
Namseongjae itself, a cultural treasure of Namwon, provides a historical backdrop that enhances the program’s charm. Originally established as a seodang during the Joseon Dynasty, it serves as a bridge between Korea’s rich past and its evolving cultural landscape.
The program seeks to appeal to both locals and tourists, offering a unique way to engage with the city’s heritage while enjoying modern artistic expressions. A city representative commented, “We’ve designed this program to provide new and exciting activities for both residents and visitors. It’s an opportunity to connect tradition with creativity, and we hope it brings joy to families and sparks curiosity about Namwon’s cultural heritage.”
The Glow Playground is not only an event for play but also a platform for celebrating local artistry. By collaborating with regional youth artists, the program emphasizes community involvement and the importance of fostering artistic innovation.
The event is open to participants of all ages and offers a rare chance to explore art and culture in a lively, interactive setting. With the combination of traditional games and cutting-edge neon art, Glow Playground stands out as a testament to Namwon’s commitment to blending history with contemporary culture.
This unique initiative highlights Namwon’s dedication to creating engaging cultural programs and serves as an invitation for families to come together, create memories, and explore the colorful intersections of past and present.
