Netflix has released an in-depth behind-the-scenes video of Squid Game: Season 2, offering fans a glimpse into the making of the highly anticipated sequel. Titled The Making of Squid Game: Season 2, the 27-minute featurette was uploaded on January 3, marking the first time a Korean production has been featured in Netflix’s behind-the-scenes content series. Previous titles such as Stranger Things and Money Heist also received similar treatment.

The video showcases insights from director Hwang Dong Hyuk, production designer Chae Kyung Sun, and cast members Lee Jung Jae, Lee Byung Hun, and Wi Ha Joon. The team delves into the unprecedented success of the first season and the creative processes that shaped the upcoming installment.

Director Hwang described the sequel as a continuation of Gi Hun's journey, following his determination to uncover the masterminds behind the games. "Gi Hun stays true to the promise he made at the end of Season 1, struggling to expose those responsible for orchestrating the games," he explained.

The featurette also explores the evolution of the storyline, the introduction of new characters, and the design of the games. It provides a detailed breakdown of the creative decisions behind iconic games like Red Light, Green Light, 5-in-6 Modern Pentathlon, and the Pairing Game. Hwang revealed why the series starts with the infamous "ddakji man," explaining its pivotal role in setting the tone for the season.

Production designer Chae Kyung Sun discussed the distinct visual concepts of the game sets, which juxtapose childlike wonder with brutal reality. Actor Lee Byung Hun echoed this sentiment, remarking, "Each set was so surreal that stepping onto them felt like entering another world. The contrast between the beautiful environments and the violence that unfolds within them defines the essence of Squid Game."

New game rules were another highlight. Lee Jung Jae praised the introduction of voting between games, calling it "a stroke of genius." Director Hwang elaborated, stating, "The voting system is used cunningly by the game organizers, creating sharp divisions and intensifying the conflicts." He also noted how the OX voting system serves as a metaphor for global social tensions, symbolically capturing the divides and disagreements people face.

Hwang concluded the video with reflections on the series' broader message. "Through the people in the game, we aim to present a mirror to our behaviors. It’s designed to feel like someone else’s story, but it’s very much about us."

Squid Game: Season 2 will follow Gi Hun, played by Lee Jung Jae, as he re-enters the deadly games to face the enigmatic Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung Hun. The tension between the two characters drives the narrative, which continues to explore themes of survival, morality, and human nature.

With the first season becoming a global phenomenon, expectations for Squid Game: Season 2 are at an all-time high. The behind-the-scenes video not only builds excitement but also showcases the meticulous craftsmanship that has defined the series.
