The Daegu Culture and Arts Center (DCAC) has announced its open call for participants in the 2025 Young Artist of the Year program and the prestigious Sambo Art Award. These initiatives aim to identify, support, and showcase emerging talent in the visual arts, further cementing Daegu as a hub for artistic innovation.

Celebrating its 28th anniversary, the Young Artist of the Year program is a well-established platform dedicated to fostering young artists active in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region. Starting in 2025, the program will merge with the Sambo Art Award, which is supported by the Sambo Cultural Foundation and Sambo Motors Co., Ltd. The top artist from the five selected for the Young Artist program will be awarded the Sambo Art Award, along with a 30-million KRW prize.

Significant changes have been introduced for the 2025 edition to expand eligibility and inclusivity. The age limit for applicants has been raised to 45 years, and previous recipients of the Young Artist of the Year designation are now eligible to reapply. These adjustments reflect the DCAC’s commitment to recognizing a broader range of talent and offering second chances to outstanding contributors in the art community.

Artists working in all visual arts disciplines—ranging from painting, printmaking, and calligraphy to sculpture, crafts, installation, photography, and video—are invited to participate. Applicants must be active primarily in the Daegu-Gyeongbuk region and born between 1980 and 2000. Submissions will be accepted from December 16 to 20, 2024.

The selection process includes two stages. In January 2025, applicants will undergo an initial review of their portfolios and proposed exhibition plans for the year. Finalists will then participate in an interview to assess their artistic vision and potential. Selected artists will receive 5 million KRW in creative support funds, dedicated exhibition space, pamphlet production assistance, and the opportunity to collaborate with an art critic for their exhibition.

Artists interested in applying should download the application forms and portfolio templates available on the Daegu Culture and Arts Center’s website (daeguartscenter.or.kr). Submissions can be sent via email to art@dgfca.or.kr. Further inquiries can be made at 053-430-7686.

By integrating the Young Artist program with the Sambo Art Award, the DCAC seeks to provide greater visibility and resources for emerging talent. The initiative represents a comprehensive effort to promote artistic excellence while honoring the contributions of the Sambo Cultural Foundation in nurturing Korea's cultural landscape.
