The city of Rueil-Malmaison is hosting a comprehensive retrospective of photographer Olivier Dassault's work at the Atelier Grognard, running until January 4, 2026. The exhibition, titled "Inspirations: Abstract Expressions," celebrates the artistic legacy of the late industrialist and parliamentarian who passed away in 2021.
Dassault, who was known for his role as a captain of industry within the Dassault Group (owner of Le Figaro) and his parliamentary activities, also gained significant recognition for his photography work. His exhibition history since 1973 spans major cities including Paris, London, Geneva, Brussels, New York, Los Angeles, Marrakech, and Madrid, demonstrating the international appeal of his artistic vision.
This marks the second time Rueil-Malmaison has featured Dassault's work, following a 2017 exhibition called "Grand Angle." According to curator Chantal Dusserre-Bresson, Dassault had developed a special connection to the Atelier Grognard venue. "He had fallen in love with this place, with its luminosity," she explains while unveiling an imposing representation of the site by Dassault himself.
The current retrospective showcases the distinctive qualities that defined Dassault's photographic style. Visitors are immediately struck by the brilliance of each shot, followed by the uniqueness of his sources of inspiration as a world traveler. His work demonstrates a particular vision of beauty, as suggested by the exhibition's subtitle indicating his desire to "show the beauty of the world differently."
