A stunning home renovation on Australia's Gold Coast has successfully combined three distinct design philosophies to create a unique living space that perfectly captures the region's relaxed lifestyle. The homeowners, who relocated from Victoria's Mornington Peninsula, transformed their Currumbin property with the help of joinery and interior design firm Mosh Home, creating a space that blends Melbourne's bush modernist aesthetic with California bungalow style and Japanese minimalism.

The couple initially purchased the Currumbin property for its prime location – a spacious flat block within walking distance of Currumbin Beach. However, the existing house fell short of their aesthetic expectations, particularly when compared to the textured and warm Melbourne homes they had grown to love in the city's outer northeast region. The homeowners were uncertain whether a simple renovation could achieve their desired look until they engaged Mosh Home for the project.

Libby Brady, director of Mosh Home, explained that the clients originally planned a complete knock-down rebuild but ultimately decided on a more conservative renovation approach to minimize costs. "They initially planned on a knock down rebuild, but after some consideration, flipped their strategy to focus on a renovation – retaining elements of the house that worked and reconfiguring main spaces like the kitchen, living and outdoor spaces to make the most of the natural light and surrounding landscape," Brady said.

The design team adjusted the floor plan, which was documented by building designer Brad Ruddell Design. The transformation relied heavily on updating the home's material palette, successfully incorporating elements from multiple design traditions. "And of course, living in Queensland, we love a strong indoor-outdoor connection too," Brady noted. "Having moved up from Red Hill, Victoria, our clients really wanted to embrace the environment and the outdoor lifestyle Currumbin offers."

The homeowners refused to compromise on materials, specifically requesting as much timber as possible throughout the entire project. This included all joinery, windows, and doors, with spotted gum surfaces serving as a prominent feature throughout the home. These warm timber elements are beautifully complemented by terracotta tiles and carefully planned landscaping by CAPO Landscapes, which surrounds both the new pool area and an internal courtyard.

The renovation was completed remarkably quickly, with the entire project taking just 14 months from start to finish – four months for design and 10 months of construction. Brady believes the renovated home has achieved its goal of supporting the clients' lifestyle aspirations. "Not only does it feel like a genuine reflection of their style, but we know firsthand the life-changing magic of good joinery and its ability to transform homes and the way we live," she said. "Take a humble home and add exceptional joinery, and it'll inject a little more calm, organization, and joy into your everyday life."
