Artist Bob Murphy, based in Waterford and Kilkenny, has launched a comprehensive exhibition of his paintings at the Index Gallery within Waterford City Council Central Library on Lady Lane. The exhibition, which opened on Wednesday, November 5, will run for two weeks during regular library operating hours and is being held in support of the Solas Cancer Support Centre.

Murphy's artistic journey began by chance after many years away from painting. "How I got into painting was by chance after many years. I have always liked painting as I did it going to school and did art for my leaving cert and got on well," Murphy explained. After leaving school, he made himself a promise to return to art someday, frequently mentioning his passion for the medium to his family members.

His wish became reality when his sister-in-law, Mary Butler, presented him with an art painting kit featuring acrylic paints. This gift marked the beginning of what has now become a more than 20-year painting career. Murphy began attending weekly art classes and has maintained this practice consistently over the years, finding that while he enjoys working on his own during evening hours, the structured class environment helps maintain his focus and artistic development.

Murphy's artistic portfolio encompasses a diverse range of subjects, including landscapes, animals, ships, and portrait work. Throughout his artistic journey, he has been mentored by several influential teachers who have shaped his technique and approach. "I think it is also worth mentioning the people who have helped me on the way. My thanks to Alfonso Santini who initially helped me to get used to using acrylics and guiding me with the initial paintings," Murphy said.

He also credits the late Fergus Dillon, who passed away several years ago, as a significant influence on his work. "I have always been impressed by his collection of watercolors of Waterford," Murphy noted, reflecting on Dillon's impact on his artistic vision. Currently, Murphy continues his artistic education under the guidance of Jon O'Donovan, who has been instrumental in helping him develop his skills with colors, shades, and the visual composition of his paintings.

The current exhibition represents a comprehensive showcase of Murphy's artistic evolution over recent years, offering visitors the opportunity to view the breadth and development of his work. The public is cordially invited to visit the Index Gallery at the Central Library to experience this collection, which will remain on display until Wednesday, November 19. The exhibition not only celebrates Murphy's artistic achievements but also serves the important cause of supporting the Solas Cancer Support Centre through this community cultural event.
