Local photographer Ron Hendricks has received prestigious recognition from the International Photography Hall of Fame, taking first place in the organization's Vision & Viewpoint competition. This significant achievement marks another milestone in what has become an exceptionally successful year for the accomplished artist.
Hendricks' recent accolades extend beyond the International Photography Hall of Fame recognition. In 2025, he has also claimed first place in a juried competition at the DART Center in Norfolk, Virginia, as well as in an online exhibition hosted by the Cultural Center of Cape Cod. These multiple victories demonstrate the broad appeal and technical excellence of his photographic work across different venues and judging panels.
The photographer's journey began five decades ago when he purchased his first camera in his early twenties. "Initially, it was just to record the places and things that were going on in my life, which included a fair amount of travel including a couple years in Alaska in the Coast Guard," Hendricks explained. What started as simple documentation gradually evolved into something much more significant.
While Hendricks couldn't pinpoint the exact moment his perspective shifted, he found himself increasingly viewing the world through a camera lens. This passion persisted even after his Coast Guard service ended, leading him to pursue formal education in photography. In the 1980s, he earned a bachelor's degree in photography from Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona.
Despite his growing expertise and dedication, Hendricks maintained that photography remained more of a passionate hobby than a professional pursuit for many years. "Even though I was putting a lot of time into my photography, it was still more of a hobby and not a profession," he noted. The digital revolution changed his approach significantly. "Then, when digital came along around 20 years ago, I made the switch to that and have been ever since," Hendricks said.
The quality and impact of Hendricks' work is perhaps best illustrated by the commentary from a juror regarding his piece titled "Restless and Unsatisfied," which won first place at the Virginia competition earlier in 2025. The juror wrote: "When I first walked through the exhibition this piece immediately grabbed me. It hasn't let go yet. The powerful engagement with the viewer is paramount here, and is augmented by the medium. There is continuity to the metallic shine, and the fragmentation thereof that is unified in such a way that the primary image is enhanced, rather than diluted by the fragmentation."
For Hendricks, the creative process itself has always been rewarding, but external recognition adds another dimension to his artistic journey. "Working on my photography and enjoying it has been a reward in itself, but having others also acknowledge it and find something meaningful in viewing it has been deeply satisfying," he shared.
Currently, Hendricks maintains a workspace as part of Community Arts at T-Rex Hall, located at 349 E Street. He is one of approximately twelve artists who have established creative spaces within this collaborative environment. While T-Rex Hall is not typically open for casual public visits, Hendricks welcomes interested viewers who make appointments in advance.
